HC Deb 18 March 1970 vol 798 cc147-8W
Mr. Barnett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a further statement about the number of unqualified teachers in maintained schools.

Mr. Edward Short

I welcome this opportunity to correct the figure given in answer to the Question asked by my hon. Friend on 5th March. Last October, counting part-timers in full-time equiva- lents, there were, in fact, about 3,000 full-time unqualified teachers in maintained schools not 2,000. I very much regret any inconvenience which may have been caused by the incorrect figure given in my earlier answer.
