73. Mr. Rose

asked the Minister for the Civil Service (1) whether he will take steps to extend the scope and powers of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Administration;

(2) whether he will seek powers to allow the Parliamentary Commissioner for Administration to initiate inquiries on the receipt of information or on his own initiative;

(3) whether he will consult with the Parliamentary Commissioner for Administration regarding possible spheres for extending the commissioner's powers.

Mr. Shore

The Government have no plans at present for extending the Parliamentary Commissioner's powers, though it is considering the Report of the Select Committee and consultations are proceeding about the possibility of setting up commissioners for local government and for the health service.
