HC Deb 16 March 1970 vol 798 c76W
Mr. Brian Parkyn

asked the Minister of Transport what research he has made into finding an alternative less corrosive material than salt as an application to icy roads.

Mr. Bob Brown

We know of no alternative as effective or as cheap as salt. However, a close watch is kept on developments here and in other countries and if any other suitable material became available we should certainly consider using it. The Road Research Laboratory is testing two substances which can be added to salt to inhibit corrosion, but it may be some time before results are available.
