HC Deb 16 March 1970 vol 798 cc22-3W
Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will state for the latest convenient period of three years the amount of payments made in each year for hospital treatment under Section 212 of the Road Traffic Act, 1960, and for emergency treatment under Section 213, respectively; and what estimate he has made of the man-hours of hospital employees required annually in connection with each of such payments.

Mr. Crossman

Payments to National Health Service hospitals in England under Sections 212 and 213, most of which related to Section 212 were—

£
1966–67 549,000
1967–68 575,000
1968–69 579,000

Information on the amounts paid under each Section, and the time spent by hospital employees in connection with them, is not available centrally, and could only be obtained at considerable effort.

The maximum charges for hospital treatment and the emergency treatment fee were increased from 1st January, 1969, to secure a net return corresponding more closely to the cost of the services provided.
