Sir R. Russell

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware that toy pianos finished with paint containing 21.03 per cent. of lead, compared with the permitted maximum of 0.05 per cent., imported from China, are on sale in shops in the London Borough of Brent; and if he will prohibit the importation of such goods, in view of their lethal danger to children.

Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody

The sale or possession for sale of toys coated with paint containing more than a specified maximum level of lead is prohibited under the Toys (Safety) Regulations, 1967, and any importer who offers such goods for sale is committing an offence under the Consumer Protection Act.
