HC Deb 13 March 1970 vol 797 cc393-4W
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many British missionaries, doctors and relief workers have been required to leave Nigeria; and what reasons were given by the authorities.

Mr. Foley

Seven missionaries who are United Kingdom citizens have been required to leave Nigeria after being found guilty on charges of illegally entering Nigeria.

Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will make a further statement on the part being played by United Kingdom citizens in the relief of distress in Nigeria.

Mr. Foley

Of the 175 expatriate workers in the Nigerian relief operation, 93 are British, most of them paid for from funds provided by Her Majesty's Government.

In addition to these, valuable relief work has been done by members of the Child Medical Care Unit, Enugu, which is financed under British technical assistance by the Ministry of Overseas Development. Other British citizens have also rendered much-needed assistance in the relief of suffering in the aftermath of the war.
