HC Deb 11 March 1970 vol 797 cc316-7W
Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will take steps to negative the drift south from Scotland of workers which will be increased by the proposed Channel Tunnel.

Mr. Ross

I would refer my hon. and learned Friend to my reply to his similar Question on 12th February.—[Vol. 795. c.399–400.]

57. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what plans he has for counteracting the trend south from North-East Scotland to South-West Scotland and England of industrial craftsmen, craftswomen and other workers.

Mr. Ross

Since this Government extended to the whole of North-East Scotland the advantages of development area status, the region has shared in the dramatic reduction in recent years in Scotland's net migration loss to England and Wales, thus proving the effectiveness of the intensified assistance to development areas which we have made available.
