HC Deb 11 March 1970 vol 797 c313W
Mr. Buchanan-Smith

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what estimate he has made of the long-term effect on the salmon fishing industry in the United Kingdom on the basis that the catching of salmon off Greenland continues at or exceeds the rate of 1969.

Mr. Hoy

The success of the industry depends mainly on the strengths of the annual runs of adult salmon and grilse returning to their home waters to spawn. The evidence so far available shows that continuing catches off Greenland at or above the 1969 level could markedly reduce annual runs in the United King-darn, but the extent of the reduction cannot yet be estimated with precision.
