NORTHUMBERLAND
Trunk Road
A1 Haggerston Diversion To remove a dangerous right angled bend and generally improve this road.
Principal Roads
Newcastle, Central Motorway East To alleviate traffic congestion in the town centre.
Jesmond Road/Stephenson Road, Stage 1 To take traffic from the new motorway to the coast via the new coast road.
Redheugh Bridge and Approaches To replace existing bridge which is substandard.
Hadrian Road to Bewicke Street (Wallsend) To open up derelict areas of land thus enabling development.
Tynemouth, New York Road Improvement Replacement of the existing A191.
DURHAM
Trunk Road
A1 Northwards from Birtley By-pass Approximately 1 mile of new dual carriageway.
Principal Roads
Durham City Through Road, Stage II New bridge over River Wear at Elvet and approach roads and roundabout.
Spennymoor Town Centre Realignment of A6072 to connect with trunk road A167 at Thinford.
Washington New Town Project II, Phase I Approximately 1⅓ mile of dual 24 foot carriageways.
Stanley Town Centre By-pass Realignment of A693 to south and east of Stanley town centre.
Gateshead Western By-pass To take westbound traffic away from the centre of Gateshead.
Western By-pass to Askew Road (Consett Route). To link the new Redheugh Bridge to the Gateshead Western By-pass.
West Central Route, Gateshead To alleviate traffic conditions in the town centre.
Blaydon to New Scotswood Bridge Widening of the A695 from the New Scotswood Bridge westwards.
Sunderland—Wheatsheaf Traffic Management. Gyratory system to relieve the severe congestion at Dame Dorothy/North Bridge Street Junction.
Washington Cross Road An important spine road in Sunderland highway network and will replace existing principal road B1289 which will be severed by new Sunderland By-pass.
Darlington Inner Ring Road, Stage III To provide a route round the town centre for traffic entering and leaving the town via the A68 thus relieving traffic in town centre.

Wolviston to Seal Sands A new road to link the A19 and the A178 to take account of development north of the River Tees where heavy industries and refineries are being established.
