asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will state the amount involved in unpaid fines in each of the five years ending 31st December, 1969.

On 31st December, 1969, the total amount of fines unpaid in courts in England and Wales outside Inner London amounted to £4,759,051. The corresponding figures for 1968 and 1967 were £3,749,625 and £2,921,000. All these figures include fines the time for payment of which had not expired. Figures for earlier years are not readily available.
