HC Deb 10 March 1970 vol 797 cc279-80W
56. Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what new school buildings, by local name, have been constructed in the Isle of Lewis since March 1964; what was the total cost, and his Department's contribution in each case; and if he will give the same information regarding school hostels.

Mr. Ross

New primary schools were completed at Tong and Stornoway at a total approved cost of £422,000; and one hostel at Stornoway at an approved cost of £205,000. In addition, the approved cost of alterations and extensions to existing schools was £68,000. My Department makes no direct financial contribution towards local authorities' capital expenditure on educational building. Central Government assistance for revenue expenditure, including loan charges, is given through the rate support grant.
