asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what were the total number of drug offences which were the subject of court proceedings for the latest known period in 1969 and the corresponding period in 1968.

The latest available information is that between 1st January and 30th September, 1969, 4,800 persons were proceeded against in England and Wales for offences under the Drugs (Prevention of Misuse) Act 1964 or the Dangerous Drugs Acts 1965 and 1967; of these 552 persons were committed for trial and 3,814 were convicted summarily. The figures for the corresponding period in 1968 are 3,783 proceeded against, 460 committed for trial and 2,937 convicted summarily.
