HC Deb 09 March 1970 vol 797 cc246-7W
96. Mr. Tilney

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what is the value of the £ sterling now compared to 1st January, 1969;

(2) what has been the increase in the cost of living between 1st January, 1969, and the latest available date.

Mr. William Rodgers

Between January, 1969, and January, 1970, the cost of living, as measured by the index of retail prices, rose by 5 per cent. This is equivalent to a decline in the internal purchasing power of the £ sterling from 20s. 0d. in January, 1969, to 19s. 1d. in January, 1970.
