HC Deb 09 March 1970 vol 797 cc252-3W
Mr. David Howell

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will state the main objectives of the International Passenger Survey carried out by the Government Social Survey and the period of years over which this survey has been carried on; and if he will end it.

Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody

To provide the basis for estimates of the travel account in the balance of payments, and of parts of the civil aviation and shipping accounts; to provide an analysis of overseas visitors to the United Kingdom for the use of those concerned with the development of tourism; and to provide the Registrars General with information about the nature of migration, both inward and outward. It has been carried out much in its present form since 1962, and is still needed.
