Since the publication of the 1966 White Paper on Polytechnics and Other Colleges the 3 further education building programmes 1967–68–1969–70 have included projects to an estimated value of £17.7 million at colleges now forming part, or proposed to form part, of polytechnics.
§ Mr. Laneasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will give details of the building programme for polytechnics over the next two years.
§ Mr. Fowler18 major building projects for polytechnics, to an estimated value of £6.2 million, have been authorised to start in 1970–71. I will send a detailed list to the hon. Member. The list of projects authorised to start in 1971–72 will be compiled later this year.

Under the Articles of Government the Governing Body submits its annual revenue estimates to the local education authority maintaining the polytechnics, for their consideration and approval; particulars of polytechnic estimates are not collected by the Department. Their expenditure on polytechnics is part of the total expenditure by local authorities which is aided from the Exchequer through the operation of the Rate Support Grant.
