§ Mr. Barnettasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether he will introduce legislation to provide mortgages, particularly for people over 50 years of age, for householders affected by redevelopment schemes.
§ Mr. FreesonLocal authorities have been encouraged to lend money for house purchase to people displaced by redevelopment. And there is no reason why anyone able to afford the repayments involved should not apply to the authority. If the person receives compensation as an owner-occupier, he will not need so much by way of a loan and may therefore be able to obtain a loan from a recognised lender.
§ Mr. Barnettasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether he will introduce legislation to provide that councils are not entitled to make deductions from the market value of property on redevelopment if the householder is provided with a council tenancy; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Denis HowellCouncils are not empowered to impose an abatement of compensation as a condition of rehousing; and rehousing obligations are not affected by the payment of compensation. Consequently no question arises of legislation to achieve these objectives.
