HC Deb 03 March 1970 vol 797 c55W
45. Mr. Silvester

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he will seek to lower the proportion of council houses from its present level of 30 per cent. of the total housing stock.

Mr. Greenwood

Local authority housing has become about 30 per cent. of the toal housing stock in Great Britain because other agencies have not met the need for rented accommodation. This need will continue for the foreseeable future. In the meantime the Government encourages building for home ownership, housing associations and societies, new towns, as well as for local authorities.
