asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the number of children in classes of over 40 in maintained primary and secondary schools at the latest available date.

Miss Bacon

In January 1969 654,000 pupils were in registered classes of over 40. This figure includes many pupils, particularly in secondary schools, who were taught for most of their time in smaller groups. This year's total is likely to be very much lower.
