asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will ensure that gates across classified and unclassified roads are wide enough to allow passage for modern agricultural machinery such as combine harvesters.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

This is the responsibility of the local highway authorities, who also have the power, in suitable cases, to replace gates by cattle grids.
