HC Deb 24 July 1970 vol 804 cc253-4W
Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity if he will review the system of grants available for apprentices attending training under the Road Transport Industry Training Board so that they may include all travelling expenses.

Mr. Dudley Smith

Under the proposals of the Road Transport Industry Training Board for training grants for the period 1st August, 1970 to 31st July, 1971 which my right hon. Friend has now approved a number of grants are less than those previously payable because of the Board's desire to avoid the need for an increase in its levy. The grants for travelling and subsistence are re-arranged so that the effect of the expected net reduction in board expenditure on these items falls relatively less severely on those travelling longer distances. There is provision for exceptional treatment for trainees where air travel from the Islands to the most convenient railhead on the mainland is involved.
