§ Mr. Frank Allaunasked the Minister of Overseas Development in view of past assistance rendered to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, by Her Majesty's Government and its agencies, whether the Government will authorise further help towards the reconstruction, re-equipment and repair of the university for which £5 million is needed.
§ Mr. WoodUnless an official request is received from the Nigerian Federal Military Government, I am not free to decide what, if any, assistance should be given by Her Majesty's Government towards the reconstruction of this university.
§ Mr. Frank Allaunasked the Minister of Overseas Development if the Government will authorise a further grant of £5 million to relieve, as soon as possible, the areas of greatest need in Nigeria.
§ Mr. WoodNigeria's relief needs are under frequent discussion with the Nigerian Federal Military Government. The balance of the £5 million made available by Her Majesty's Government in January appears to be sufficient to cover all requests so far agreed with the Nigerian Federal authorities. Should additional urgent needs arise, we would consider them sympathetically.
