§ Mr. Proudfootasked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity if he will introduce legislation to slow down the rate of mergers.
§ Mr. BryanThe Monopolies and Mergers Act, 1965, already provides powers under which my right hon. Friend can refer any significant merger to the Monopolies Commission for examination by them. If the Commission find that the merger is contrary to the public interest, there is power under the legislation to prohibit it.
