HC Deb 22 July 1970 vol 804 cc152-3W
Mr. Harold Walker

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity what number of dock workers he estimates will be on the register in 1975.

Mr. Dudley Smith

There are no reliable estimates of the number of dock workers who will be on the registers in 1975.

Mr. Harold Walker

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity what is the number of registered dock workers at the most recent date for which figures are available; and how this compares with five years ago.

Mr. Dudley Smith

On 14th July, 1970, the provisional estimate of the number of men on the registers of dock workers was 46,514, including 951 supplementary—i.e., temporary—workers. The comparable figure at 13th July, 1965, was 66,060, including 1,247 temporary workers.

Mr. Harold Walker

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity what are the average earnings of registered dock workers at the latest available date; and how these compare with a date five years earlier.

Mr. Dudley Smith

The gross average earnings of registered dock workers for the first quarter of 1970—the latest date for which figures are available—were £35 13s. 6d. No comparable figure is available for the first quarter of 1965. The figure for those engaged on a daily or half-daily basis was then £20 15s. 11d.
