HC Deb 22 July 1970 vol 804 c136W
81. Mr. Rankin

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland when Glasgow Corporation applied to extend the main runway at Abbotsinch Airport; how long elapsed before sanction was granted to proceed with the infill; when that part was finished; what steps remain to be taken and when these will be concluded; and what has been the total time to date taken by these proceedings.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

Glasgow Corporation applied to Renfrew County Council in April, 1968 for permission to lay infill at the end of the main Abbotsinch runway. This application was called in by my predecessor, and approved in February, 1969. I understand that the infilling was completed in April, 1970.

An application to extend the runway to 8,400 feet was lodged by the Corporation on 19th November, 1969 and called in by my predecessor on 28th January, 1970. A number of objections to the proposal were received, and a public inquiry will open on 23rd September. When I have received and considered the report of this inquiry I will give my decision on the application.
