Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity what was the average annual compound rate of increase in the wages of dockers, coal-miners, firemen, bus drivers, railwaymen and building trade workers between 1954 and 1969.

Set out below are the average annual compound rates of increase in men's basic wage rates between 1st January, 1954, and 31st December, 1969, for the occupations concerned:

Railwaymen 5.3
Building trade workers 4.3
* Includes effect of modernisation payment of 8s. a day payable since 18th September, 1967.

These figures do not of course correspond to average rates of increase in earnings in these occupations.
