54. Mr. Wolrige-Gordon

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total of the United Kingdom's first and second line reserves of international currency on 30th September, 1964; and what they were on the last available date before 18th July, 1970.

Mr. Higgins

The official reserves on 30th September, 1964, totalled £907 million. In addition the Treasury dollar portfolio was valued at about £470 million. On 30th June, 1970, the official reserves, into which the dollar portfolio had been taken during the intervening period, totalled £1,163 million.
