Mr. Trew

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity (1) how many redundancies of male and female employees have resulted from factory closures during the past five years in South-East London and North-West Kent; and what are the estimated additional redundancies from closures which have been notified to his Department but not yet implemented;

(2) how many factory closures have taken place or been notified to his Department during the past five years in South-East London and North-West Kent.

Further to my reply, [OFFICIAL REPORT, 9th July, 1970 Vol. 803, c.78–9] the information about factory closures and consequent redundancies in South-East London and North-West Kent which were reported during the period 1st July, 1965 to 13th July, 1970 follows. Closures and redundancies involving small numbers of workpeople are not included.

South-East London (including Beckenham, Bermondsey, Bexley, Borough, Bromley, Camberwell, Deptford, Erith, Lewisham, Orpington, Sidcup and Woolwich Employment Exchange areas):

In the period concerned, 109 factory closures were reported, involving some 11,550 male and 5,900 female redundancies which have already taken place and about 2,300 male and 730 female redundancies which have still to be implemented.

North-West Kent (including Dartford, Gravesend and Chatham Employment Exchange areas):

In the period concerned, 18 factory closures were reported, involving some 1,100 male and 300 female redundancies which have already taken place and nearly 450 male and about 15 female redundancies which have still to be implemented.
