HC Deb 20 July 1970 vol 804 cc20-1W
100. Mr. Onslow

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he has received a report on the engine fire suffered by British Overseas Airways Corporation 707/436 G-APFV on take-off from London Airport, Heathrow, recently; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Corfield

The Board of Trade was notified by British Overseas Airways Corporation of the incident to Boeing 707/436 G-APFN on 22nd June, 1970, and the Chief Inspector of Accidents immediately arranged for a preliminary inquiry to be made, which established that just after take-off fire occurred in the port outer engine; the crew applied the correct emergency drills, extinguished the fire and made an immediate emergency landing at Heathrow, where passengers were disembarked. An inspection of the engine has revealed the failure of a compressor wheel. Action is being taken to minimise the possibility of a repetition of such failures. No formal accident report will be issued.
