HC Deb 15 July 1970 vol 803 cc230-1W
100. Mr. Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many Libyan cadets are undergoing training at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst; and what is the cost to public funds.

Mr. Anthony Royle

There are two Libyan officers currently attending the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. The total cost of their training is about £3,000 per annum, which is met by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

101. Mr. Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many Libyan naval personnel are undergoing training in the United Kingdom; and what is the cost to public funds.

Mr. Anthony Royle

There are 13 Libyan officers and 83 ratings currently attending British naval training establishments. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office meets the costs of 12 of the officers, amounting to some £8,100 per annum.

Mr. Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether, in view of Great Britain's evacuation of Libyan bases and of the current policy of the Libyan Government regarding British interests in the Middle East, he will cancel the arrangements for training Libyan naval and military personnel in Great Britain.

Mr. Anthony Royle

No. We value the long-standing co-operation between the United Kingdom and Libya in this and many other fields, and wish it to continue.
