§ Mrs. Kellettasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if in view of the hardship caused by the recent inflation to the older members of the population who put their money into War Loan and other undated Government stock, he will consider redeeming at par undated Government securities which are in the hands of original owners or their widows.
§ Mr. HigginsI have always had great sympathy for those holders of War Loan and other undated Government stock who are suffering hardship. I have examined in great depth a number of suggestions for dealing with this problem, including redemption at par for original holders or their widows. I regret to say that all the suggestions that I have considered would create more problems than they would solve.
