HC Deb 14 July 1970 vol 803 cc190-1W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity what was the average rate of wage increase in the period 1951 to 1969, or the nearest available year of reference, for coal miners, firemen, bus drivers, teachers, local government officials, railwaymen, textile workers, building trade workers, engineering trades and postmen.

Mr. Bryan

Set out below are the average percentage increases in men's basic wage rates between 1st January, 1951, and 31st December, 1969, for each of the listed manual occupations:

Coalminers 153
Firemen (Provinces) 167
Bus drivers (London Transport) 183
Local government manuals 176
Railwaymen 190
Textile workers 107
Building trade workers 144
Engineering trades 156
Postmen (London) 198
These figures do not of course correspond to increases in earnings in these occupations. For full-time male teachers in grant-aided schools and establishments in England and Wales it is estimated that over the period 31st March, 1950, to 31st December, 1969, average earnings rose by 241 per cent.
