HC Deb 14 July 1970 vol 803 cc162-3W
59. Mr. Wall

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government, in view of the withdrawal of Circular 67/68, which recommended deferment of increased expenditure on river pollution prevention on the grounds of financial stringency, if he is satisfied that the estimated cost of improving the standard of each river will not impose an undue strain on the economy; and if he will publish the survey of estimated costs.

Mr. Peter Walker

I am sending a copy of Circular No. 44/70 dated 4th June to my hon. Friend. It makes it clear that the pace of river improvement must depend upon the resources which can be made available for that purpose, and that when the River Pollution Survey is published next year it will be possible to draw up more considered programmes of work. The survey will include an estimate of the cost of desirable remedial works.
