Mr. Golding

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the average period of waiting to be admitted to general medical, general surgical, traumatic/orthopaedic, gynaecological, paediatric, tuberculosis and chest, and ear, nose and throat beds, respectively, in the North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary and the City General Hospital, Hartshill.

The average waiting periods are estimated to be as follows:

North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary:

  • General surgical—6–7 weeks.
  • Traumatic/Orthopaedic—2 weeks.
  • Gynaecology—2–3 months.
  • Ear, Nose and Throat—2–2½ months.

City General Hospital, Hartshill:

  • General surgical—2–3 months.
  • Gynaecology—12 days.
  • Paediatrics—4 days.
  • Ear, Nose and Throat—4–6 months.

There is no waiting time at either hospital for general medical or tuberculosis and chest beds, nor for paediatric beds at North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary or traumatic surgery beds at the City General Hospital.
