HC Deb 13 July 1970 vol 803 c131W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services why Members of Parliament who do not personally control their salaries and conditions of employment and dismissal are classified under the social security scheme as self-employed; and whether he will reclassify them as normally employed persons in the same manner as other employees who receive their salaries from sources other than their own businesses.

Sir K. Joseph

No. All employed persons including Members of Parliament who are not employed under a contract of service are classified under the National Insurance Acts as self-employed.
