Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the total amount paid to consultants for car mileage allowances in 1969, the average per consultant, the total amount paid for subsistence allowances, and the average per consultant.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

It is estimated that in the financial year 1969–70 about £174,000 was paid to consultants as travelling expenses (about £134 per consultant employed). Travelling expenses include mileage allowances, the cost of travel by public transport and subsistence allowances but the proportion of expenditure under these headings is not known.

Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland which major hospitals have consultant vacancies in anaesthetics; and if he will name them.
