HC Deb 09 July 1970 vol 803 cc82-3W
Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what are the numbers and proportions of pupils now remaining at school beyond statutory age in the Rother Valley constituency; and how these compare with the national position.

Mr. van Straubenzee

Figures for Rother Valley are not readily available in my Department. For England and Wales and for Yorkshire, West Riding, as a whole the information at January, 1969, is as follows:

MAINTAINED SCHOOLS
England and Wales Yorkshire: West Riding
Number and percentage of pupils at school
15 year olds over school leaving age 218,705 (53.2%) 7,048 (45.1%)
16 year olds 182,568 (31.0%) 6,192 (28.0%)
17 year olds 95,932 (16.2%) 3,523 (16.0%)
18 year olds 33,047 (5.5%) 1,326 (5.8%)

Note: The percentages indicate the number of children aged 15 (over school leaving age)—18 expressed as percentages of the maintained school population aged 13 2–5 years earlier.
