HC Deb 09 July 1970 vol 803 c90W
46. Mr. Proudfoot

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will ensure that all future motorways should be equipped with central crash-barriers; and what is the average cost per mile for their provision on old and new motorways respectively.

Mr. Michael Heseltine

We are at present studying the whole question of installing central crash barriers. The most recent contract prices for double-sided tensioned-beam barriers are of the order of £7,000-£8,000 a mile. No long lengths of central reserve barriers have been provided on new motorways, except on the Midland Links where they were installed at a cost of £16,000 a mile. These barriers were installed with lighting and were of a special type needed because of the narrow central reserve.
