§ 46. Mr. Proudfootasked the Minister of Transport whether he will ensure that all future motorways should be equipped with central crash-barriers; and what is the average cost per mile for their provision on old and new motorways respectively.
§ Mr. Michael HeseltineWe are at present studying the whole question of installing central crash barriers. The most recent contract prices for double-sided tensioned-beam barriers are of the order of £7,000-£8,000 a mile. No long lengths of central reserve barriers have been provided on new motorways, except on the Midland Links where they were installed at a cost of £16,000 a mile. These barriers were installed with lighting and were of a special type needed because of the narrow central reserve.
