HC Deb 08 July 1970 vol 803 c66W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that a large number of cars have to be checked after sale because of the discovery of serious defects; and if he will seek powers to check new models of cars to see that such faults are unlikely to occur after sale to the end users.

Mr. Michael Heseltine

I am aware that occasionally a large number of cars have to be examined because a defect has been found in one or more individual vehicles. We do not consider legislation appropriate as the responsibility for producing vehicles free of serious defects must remain with the manufacturer.
