HC Deb 30 January 1970 vol 794 cc405-6W
Mr. Marples

asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he will give the number of civil servants in central government in each of the following years, 1900, 1910, 1930, 1950, 1960 and 1970.

Mr. Shore

There were 746,000 United Kingdom-based civil servants—including industrial staff but excluding Post Office staff—on 1st April, 1950, and 643,000 on 1st April, 1960. The figure for 1st December, 1969, which is the most recent available, was 703,000; and this figure includes approximately 15,000 staff of the National Savings Department who were included in Post Office numbers in earlier years. Comparable figures are not readily available in respect of the years 1900, 1910 or 1930.
