HC Deb 29 January 1970 vol 794 cc383-4W
Mr. Wright

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many British school teachers are in the United States of America on exchange programmes this session; and how this figure compares with each of the last five years.

Miss Jennie Lee

Exchanges under the scheme administered by the British Com- mittee for the Interchange of Teachers between the United Kingdom and the United Stages, and assisted as to travel by the U.S.-U.K. Educational Commission, are as follows for the current and the past five years:

EXCHANGES BETWEEN BRITISH AND AMERICAN SCHOOL TEACHERS
Year
1964–65 1965–66 1966–67
Number of exchanges 90 90 89
Year
1967–68 1968–69 1969–70
Number of exchanges 88 78 65

Recruitment for 1969–70 took place before increased cost of living grants were announced. It is hoped that the higher rates of grant will favourably affect the number of exchanges arranged for 1970–71.
