HC Deb 29 January 1970 vol 794 c404W
Mr. Anderson

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he is aware that the level of immunisation against poliomyelitis and diphtheria in the county of Monmouthshire is well below the Welsh average; and what steps he is taking in co-operation with the local medical authorities to improve the position.

Mr. George Thomas

I am aware that the levels of immunisation against poliomyelitis and diphtheria in Monmouthshire are low. During 1968, 59 per cent. of the children born in 1967 were immunised against diphtheria and 55 per cent against poliomyelitis. The comparative figures for Wales were 73 per cent. and 67 per cent., and those for England 78 per cent. and 74 per cent. The county medical officer of health intends to mount a campaign to improve the position as soon as possible and I am writing to the chairman of the county council to express my hope that this can be commenced with all speed.
