HC Deb 27 January 1970 vol 794 cc328-9W
Mr. Brooks

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will accept financial responsibility for the cost of television advertising of family planning.

Mr. Crossman

I have no plans at this stage for my Department to pay for television advertisements but I welcome the action of the Independent Television Authority in removing the ban on advertising family planning services. The Health Education Council is actively considering the possibility of making television fillers for free showing in public service time.

Publicity for local family planning facilities must be primarily a matter for local health authorities, which have to decide to what extent the limited resources available to them should be spent on advertising existing arrangements or expanding their services, for which, in my view, there is urgent need.
