HC Deb 27 January 1970 vol 794 cc323-4W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the annual cost of civil and structural engineering research carried out at British universities and financed by his Department.

Mr. Fowler

The Department does not finance such research directly, although universities are free to undertake it out of their general income, which includes recurrent grant, but the Science Research Council through its grant in aid on a Vote of the Department is giving support to civil and structural engineering research by means of grants and studentships. The estimated total annual expenditure is currently running at about £380,000.
