HC Deb 26 January 1970 vol 794 c280W
Mr. Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what proportion of the State schools in Great Britain have their own swimming pools; and what proposals he has for increasing the same.

Mr. Edward Short

This information is not available, but since 1958 204 enclosed and heated pools have been provided form public funds in new maintained schools and another 18 are under construction. In consultation with my right hon. Friend, the Minister of Housing and Local Government, I am encouraging local education authorities to take advantage of suitable opportunities for the provision jointly with other authorities of swimming pools whose use can be shared by the schools and the general public.
