asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what increase in savings has occurred as a result of the introduction of the Save-As-You-Earn scheme; and what have been the administrative and advertising expenses in connection therewith.

of interest and redemption date in the case of loans; whether as yet there has been any equity participation; and which of these capital transactions have been included in balance of payments returns, and which have been subject to a Treasury guarantee.

The total amount collected in the Government's scheme so far has been £2,313,000 (£1,643,000 by the Department for National Savings; £670,000 by the Trustee Savings Banks). Total advertising expenditure to end December, 1969 was about £290,00. It will not be possible for some considerable time to calculate the full administrative expenses involved in operating S.A.Y.E.
