HC Deb 22 January 1970 vol 794 cc172-3W
41. Mr. Fortescue

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what action he is taking to counteract the growing shortage of mathematics and science teachers in schools, in view of the Swann Report, Command Paper No. 3760, 1968, and the Dainton Report, Command Paper No. 3541, 1968.

Mr. Fowler

My right hon. Friend has encouraged the provision in the training institutions of places for graduate and non-graduate mathematicians and scientists. He is conducting an advertising campaign designed to interest mathematics and science graduates in teaching as a career. The Department has contacts with university appointments boards and has collaborated in running meetings at many universities designed to inform undergraduate and graduate scientists about modern methods of science teaching.
