HC Deb 20 January 1970 vol 794 c90W
53. Mr. Donald Williams

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on the plans of the Inland Revenue to computerise some of the routine work of assessing and calculating various taxes.

Mr. Taverne

Over the next 10 years the Inland Revenue will transfer to 9 computer centres all the P.A.Y.E. work now done in local tax offices. In addition, it is proposed to use the computers in the centres for the routine work of assessing and collecting the taxes on income and capital gains generally. There are separate plans for performing certain operations in connection with surtax on a computer, but these depend on the examination my right hon. Friend is making of the recommendation by the Select Committee on Estimates that surtax should be decentralised.
