HC Deb 20 January 1970 vol 794 c107W
40. Mr. Oakes

asked the President of the Board of Trade how many and which insurance companies have notified him of their intention to increase their motor insurance premiums during the next four months.

Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody

The following insurers have recently confirmed to the Board of Trade that it is their intention to raise motor insurance premiums early this year: Commercial Union Assurance, General Accident Fire and Life Assurance, Royal Insurance, Sun Alliance and London Insurance Group and the Zurich Group.

41. Mr. Oakes

asked the President of the Board of Trade (1) if he will set up a committee of inquiry into the motor insurance industry in view of the recent proposed increases in premiums and the disparity between the premium rate of different companies;

(2) if he will refer the proposed increases in motor insurance premiums to the National Board for Prices and Incomes.

Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody

I will consider whether to refer the increases to the National Board for Prices and Incomes, but I see no immediate need for a committee of inquiry into the motor insurance industry, particulary in view of its competitive nature.
