HC Deb 20 January 1970 vol 794 cc93-4W
Mr. Barnett

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the maximum amount which can be paid by cheque for goods purchased abroad whilst on holiday; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Taverne

I assume that the hon. Member is referring to a payment outside the sterling area by a resident of the United Kingdom by means of a sterling cheque drawn on an account in the United Kingdom. The purchaser must first obtain Exchange Control consent

payments accounts for 1969 are published in March. In the first three quarters of 1969, however, exports of goods and services at constant prices were about 8 per cent. higher than in the corresponding period of 1968 and imports were up about 1¾ per cent.
