HC Deb 20 January 1970 vol 794 c119W
Mr. Wright

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many guns are licensed in Scotland; and if he will take steps to halt the traffic in them.

Mr. Ross

At the end of 1968, the number of persons holding firearm certificates in Scotland was 39,780 and the number holding shotgun certificates was 69,748. Dealings in firearms are strictly controlled under the Firearms Act, 1968, and the amnesties proclaimed in 1965 and 1968 for the return of weapons not covered by certificates will have reduced the number of firearms which might find their way into an illegal traffic.
